Cay had diarrhea in her crate today. I wiped her off and washed the blankets, but we were in a hurry because we had an appointment with the vet. I wanted him to give her a general exam, check her ears (which seem to be bothering her) and check her back end. When we arrived, the vet was busy with an emergency, so I asked the receptionist to say hi to Cay, who is shy with strangers. When the vet checked her ears, he found that they were compacted with gunk. She probably had ear mites that were killed when she was treated with Revolution on April 3rd. The outsides of her ears looked clean, but deep down they were a mess. The vet had to flush out her ears while three of us held her down. During the process, she expelled more diarrhea. Yuck! Now I have to put ear medicine in her ears for two weeks to treat the inflammation. Her right ear especially was very sore; I think she’ll feel much better with her ears cleared up. We also have metronidazole for the diarrhea. The vet thinks her back end isn’t well put together, which is why she can hyperextend her hocks, but other than that he didn’t feel anything wrong.
Cay was glad to get home with me. I think when she goes with me in the truck, she still suspects that she’ll be going to an adoption event (which is scary for her with all the noise and activity), or won’t be coming back with me. But she is beginning to trust me. Once we got home, Bandit, Chase, Cay and I went out for a walk in the field. She seemed to recover well from her trip to the vet and enjoyed playing. She ran up the hill with the boys on the way out, and came back behind us when I called her to go back to the house. She hung back, but came toward us when I called and eventually followed us all the way back to the house. I didn’t have to use the leash to bring her home (this is all inside a large fenced area). She’s learning to come when I call her!!
