I’m grateful to Dawn Kairns, author of MAGGIE: the dog who changed my life: A Story of Love, for this wonderful 5-star review of 8 State Hurricane Kate (also posted on Amazon.com):

A tribute to the love between a woman and her rescue dog, to the Katrina animals left behind, and to all animal rescuers …, August 16, 2009
When Hurricane Katrina hit, the world was horrified by the loss of human life, the destruction, and the masses of people left stranded. And then the incomprehensible reality of all the animals left behind to die sank in. Jenny Pavlovic could not continue her everyday life without going to New Orleans to help care for the dogs left behind to drown or starve. Nor could she leave Kate, an older cattle dog that won her heart, to the fate of the system at Lamar Dixon, the large makeshift animal shelter in New Orleans. Against many odds, Jenny took Kate home to foster and care for her.8 State Hurricane Kate touches us in so many ways. Yes, it is Jenny’s tribute to Kate, the deep spiritual connection they shared, and how she changed Jenny’s life forever. It is also a demonstration of the strength of human and canine spirit alike, and what one courageous, determined, passionate woman can do to help the dog she loved so deeply; and to then carry on Kate’s legacy by rescuing other dogs from “death row.”
I ached with Jenny’s heartbreak in the loss of her own pets and as she encountered one health and behavior obstacle after another with Kate. I am in awe of her commitment to Kate and to dog rescue. It will warm your heart to realize the behind the scenes work of “guardian angels” across the country (that Jenny is part of) whose mission is to safely transport dogs about to be euthanized into foster homes and safe shelters nationwide.
Jenny and Kate’s story will motivate readers to volunteer our own efforts to help our local homeless pets. 8 State Hurricane Kate shows that we, too, can make a difference for one animal at a time, as Jenny did for Kate, even if we can’t save them all. I love Jenny’s resource section in the back of her book; it lists rescue agencies and provides information for pet guardians to prepare for their pet’s care in the event of an emergency or disaster situation.
I am moved by Jenny Pavlovic’s incredibly huge heart, which does not stop giving when she loses Kate. She continues Kate’s legacy by her ongoing animal rescue work, which she generously funds with 50% of her book profits through the 8 State Kate Fund.
You will feel a wide range of emotions as you read this inspirational love story, from sadness and loss to faith and hope. This book makes the world aware of the tragic consequences for the animals left behind in our country’s greatest natural disaster. In writing this book, part of Jenny’s mission is to show the world what really happened, and the heart wrenching impact on the animals left behind, most of whom lost their people forever. Having gone to Mississippi myself to work with the animals following Hurricane Katrina, I thank Jenny for writing this book so the world will now know, and I pray make certain that the animals are never left behind again.

I’m excited to announce that Bandit earned his ASCA started cattle herding title yesterday (pending ASCA approval). He moved the cattle around the course nicely and seemed pleased that I’m finally catching on! 😉 He earned his first cattle title in style, taking FIRST PLACE (a first for us)! I’m very proud of him. We had a great time! Our instructor (who took 2nd) and an ASCA judge (who took 4th) were also entered, so we had some stiff competition.
It’s so much fun to see Bandit do what he was bred to do. He was the only Australian Cattle Dog among a crowd of Australian Shepherds. I’m thankful that the ASCA crowd welcomes us since this is our only opportunity to trial on cattle in our area. Bandit will soon be officially known as Hillhaven Bolt Outofthe Blue CD HSAs RA CGC… and ASCA STDc (pending ASCA approval)! Thanks to Gene who got us started on cattle and Kim who has put in many hours training us (me!).
Bandit is my first herding dog and the only dog I’ve worked with on cattle. We got our first chance to work cattle about a year ago when I finally discovered places near our home where we could train. Bandit has always had a bit too much push for sheep. When I first saw him work cattle I realized that this push is just what he needs to move cows—to do what he was bred to do. He heads, he heels, he moves ‘em on out. He is a fantastic dog!
Wow, we won a blue ribbon! We’ve never won a blue ribbon in any venue before.
Bandit was very pleased with his cattle run on Friday. He sure looked happy and he did his mama proud!

Today I did something that I don’t often do. I rolled down my window and gave a woman a $5 bill at a red light. She had a sign that said she needed the money, that she had a medical condition and couldn’t work. I know that people sometimes stand on a corner and make a good haul panhandling when they really don’t need it. But I decided that I could spare the $5 and I was willing to take the risk that she needed the help. I had to calculate whether I had time to pull out the $5 bill and give it to her before the light turned green. I knew the people in the line of cars behind me would get impatient once the light changed. Read more…

Sheila sent an update on Rhonda, who was rescued from the kill pound at Gallipolis, Ohio a couple of weeks ago. I wrote about her on July 7th. Many people in Ohio and Minnesota came together to achieve her rescue. Sheila is fostering Rhonda (now called Ripple) near Dayton, Ohio. It didn’t take long for this girl to begin to enjoy her new situation! J If you are interested in adopting Ripple, please contact Jeff at http://www.howellingcorgirescue.rescuegroups.org/.
Quote from Sheila: “So Ripple went camping with us this weekend and looked quite terrified upon arriving at the campground Friday evening. HOWEVER, all that changed Saturday morning. lol The child has really started coming out of her shell. Read more…

Although it’s past my bedtime, I can’t let this night go by without remembering July 20th, 1969. I was almost 8 years old, a tomboy and a daddy’s girl. My how the time flies! I remember sitting with my sister in our jammies in front of the TV, waiting for Neil Armstrong to take that first step on the moon. They didn’t show everything live as they do today, but skipped back and forth between graphics simulations, shots of mission control in Houston, and eventually a fuzzy live shot or two.
This was a very exciting time for my father. As an engineer for Bendix Corporation, he had designed instruments for many spacecraft that, over time, had led to this very important mission. Indeed, he had designed instruments for the Apollo spacecraft as well. Read more…

Life is never dull around here. We’re enjoying the summer and time with each other. It’s been hard to find the time to write!
First I want to give an update on Rhonda, who I first mentioned on July 7th. She’s the blue Australian Cattle Dog that was dumped at the kill shelter in Gallipolis, Ohio after delivering her second litter of puppies. Great thanks for being a mom! She was running out of time when people came together to help her out. Read more…

My review of Maggie: The Dog Who Changed My Life, by Dawn Kairns
There are many books about special and beloved dogs, but this book goes much deeper than most. The reader is compelled to keep going, to sneak the book to work and get around any obstacle that would prevent one from reading straight through to the end. We learn early in the book that Maggie is special, but what may take the reader longer to realize is that Dawn is just as special–developing her own intuitive abilities during the course of the story. Dawn’s awakening with regard to Maggie’s health, the quality of her pet food, and the meanings of Dawn’s own dreams is a remarkable part of this story. Her willingness and ability to share this valuable information… about how our dogs view us, how the food we give them may be killing them, and how dreams and intuition may provide a more accurate diagnosis than a highly trained veterinarian… is a valuable gift. Dawn and Maggie had an amazing bond because they were both tuned in. Dawn generously teaches us valuable lessons that she learned through sometimes heartbreaking experience, and we would be wise to listen. She continues to be an advocate for the well-being of our companion animals, teaching about pet food, puppy mills and more. And Maggie’s story compels us to keep reading, straight through to the end. We would be wise to listen to what Maggie has to say as well.

8 State Hurricane Kate is on display at the ALA Conference in Chicago. Check it out at the Combined Book Exhibit booth, #2126.
“The Combined Book Exhibit is a collective exhibit of publishers of books, journals, multimedia and other media. Librarians can come to our exhibit and see books from large publishers and smaller independent presses as well as self published authors. See the book itself and decide for yourself if it would be good for your institution before you buy it from your normal channel of distribution. This is why CBE is here at ALA for you. Also, visit our revised online database, TheBookCheckOut.com, and you can learn about all the books we exhibit at ALA and other shows. Write reviews of books there so other librarians can get your feedback too. Create your own list of books you want to order through this vast database of books and publishers.”
