Maverick, Merlin and Nixon Find New Homes and… “Help Me” Rhonda Needs Our Assistance

So much has been going on here that it’s been hard to find time to write. But I want to report some great news! Maverick, an Australian Cattle Dog who was picked up as a stray in Minnesota last November, has found a fantastic new home. His new family has another ACD named Josie (my friend Josie’s first foster dog formerly known as “Johnsie”). Maverick was claimed by his breeder in December. But she backed out when he tested heartworm positive. Becky C, Brett A, the 8 State Kate Fund, the AuCaDo Rescue Fund, and others covered some of his veterinary expenses. Midwest Animal Rescue provided him with a wonderful foster home while he was treated for heartworm and eventually found him this new family. I’m so excited that he has a new loving family after being let down so many times in his life. You can read Maverick’s story beginning on page 30 of the January issue of the ACD Spotlight at this link: http://www.acdspotlight.com/.

Recently, Merlin, a blue ACD, and Nixon, a red and white ACD mix, were rescued from a kill shelter in Ohio and came to the Minnesota Valley Humane Society. This rescue was a team effort by Sjoukje, Jeff and Cynthia, Jim and Nancy, Josie, and me, along with the MVHS. Everyone pulled together to help these two dogs. I’m happy to report that they have both been adopted into new homes!

Now the same group of people in Ohio and Minnesota is working to help “Rhonda”, a blue female in another kill shelter in Ohio. On Petfinder, her photo is shown with this description: “Rhonda is a quiet dog. Her second litter of puppies was just weaned and given away as she was brought here. She is reaching out quietly to make a connection with a person – please help her!”  Click here  to see her link.

Rhonda will be given proper vet care and spayed. Then we hope to find her the loving home that she deserves.

I also heard today about a male cattle dog at a kill shelter in Kentucky—urgent! And two adolescent cattle dog mix pups, an unaltered male and female, that the farmer is threatening to shoot if someone doesn’t come take them. We try to keep up, and would like to get at the source of the problem more, but it never ends! Please spay and neuter your pets, and help these homeless pets as much as you can. Thank you.

Update on Merlin and Nixon–Looking for Homes in Minnesota

I wrote about these two in my previous post. Merlin is a blue Australian Cattle Dog and Nixon is a red Australian Cattle Dog mix (see photos below). They were both running out of time at the Washington Courthouse, Ohio kill pound. I threw a Hail Mary pass and the Minnesota Valley Humane Society offered to take them in. My cattle dog rescue friend Sjoukje in Ohio contacted Jeff, who offered to pull them and get them vetted. He drove them to Sabrina, who fostered them for a few days until transport to Minnesota could be arranged. Josie was working on a transport plan when Jim offered that his wife Nancy, who would be returning from a trip to Ohio, could drive them all the way to Minnesota. They arrived in Minnesota on Thursday night and were delivered to the MVHS on Friday morning. Jim, whose family fostered the two dogs on Thursday night, reports that “Merlin had no hesitations to go up and over the A-frame at our place. With some obedience work, he could be a good agility dog. Nixon I still say would be happy as somebody’s lap dog, but given time and the right environment who knows what he could become.” These two very nice dogs will soon be available for adoption through the Minnesota Valley Humane Society at www.mvhspets.org.

Outside of the Box

This week seems to be all about thinking and being outside of the box. First, Cay decided one night that she wanted to sleep spread out on the dog bed, not curled up in the back of her crate. So I left the crate door open and she slept all stretched out on the dog bed all night, taking up plenty of space. This was quite an accomplishment for a girl who used to plaster herself to the back of her crate whenever she was scared or tired. She is learning to TAKE UP SPACE, and that is a big step, especially if she decides to pursue a career as a herding dog! I get excited when she wants to run up to someone and jump on them to greet them. I don’t let her jump up, but I love her enthusiasm because she used to be afraid of everyone. Now she is happy to be “outside of the box”!

Last Saturday I received an e-mail message about dogs that were rapidly running out of time at the kill pound in Washington Courthouse, Ohio. Merlin was listed as “XX Urgent” and was described as a “2 year old male (intact) Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler about 35 lbs. Very friendly and good with everything. Would make a wonderful pet. No shot record.” Nixon was described as a “10 month old intact male Red Heeler mix, he is a very sweet boy who loves attention and loves to play. He gets along well with other dogs and cats and loves kids. He is about 40 lbs.”

I decided to try to help these guys, and Kevin from the Minnesota Valley Humane Society responded that he could take them in. The rest of the picture was fuzzy Read more…
