A Note From Bazza, Billabong’s Dad

Today I received the following note and photo from Bazza, Billabong’s dad. Billabong was rescued from death row at a gassing shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana in the nick of time and was transported to Bazza in Florida by a group of caring people. She arrived at her new home in Florida in September 2006, on the one-year anniversary of the date I first met Kate in Louisiana. Her story is told in Chapter 17 of Kate’s book. Billabong has grown to be a very beautiful and fortunate girl. Whenever I hear from Bazza, I am rewarded for any trying times that I’ve had in animal rescue. It’s all worth it. 🙂 Read on…

Minnesota Valley Humane Society Mardi Gras Party for the Animals and Twin Cities Pet Expo (Photos Included!)

I’m finally getting a few moments to write about the MVHS Mardi Gras Party for the Animals and the Twin Cities Pet Expo that took place last weekend. On Saturday evening I spoke and signed books at the MVHS Mardi Gras Party. My talk was entitled, “True Colors: Celebrate and BE the Purple, Green, and Gold with MVHS”. I had learned that the Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday) colors have meanings behind them. Purple stands for Justice, Green means Faith, and Gold represents Power. So when we say BE the purple, green and gold with MVHS, we mean, be the justice, faith and power for the animals in your community. Based on information in the appendix of my book and MVHS needs, Jennifer of MVHS and I came up with a list of ways that people can get involved with helping the animals at MVHS and in their communities. 8 State Hurricane Kate: Chase and Jenny’s Live TV Debut!

Here’s the link to the video of our live TV debut:

http://www.showcaseminnesota.com/show/client_article.aspx?storyid=539735

Chase and I had a lot of fun and really enjoyed meeting Corbin Seitz at channel 11 today. She is a great lady and is a dog person! 🙂 I’m looking forward to the Minnesota Valley Humane Society events this coming weekend.

Chase was rescued by my friend Sarah of Lost Fantasy Rescue in Virginia (www.lostfantasystables.org). We think he’s an ACD-Collie mix. He loves meeting people and did a wonderful job today. I think he got more camera time than I did, which is just fine with me. 🙂

Chase Goes to PetSmart

On Friday evening I had an errand to run. Realizing that Chase hadn’t been out much in the past month, I decided to take him along. It’s been very cold here for most of January, often below zero for days at a time. Bandit has been to dog training school and an obedience trial. Cayenne has been to obedience class and a TTouch workshop. But Chase has mostly stayed home since I don’t have room for all three to ride together in the heated part of the truck. Since I’ve been at home more, Chase hasn’t seen his friends at dog daycare or his friends Lisa and Becky lately.

I decided that just doing the errand and going straight home would be a disappointment to Chase, so we stopped at PetSmart and Chase GOT TO GO IN! Read more…

TTouch for My Spice Girl

Last weekend Cay and I attended a TTouch seminar by Sage (Stacy) Lewis, author of Java: The True Story of a Shelter Dog Who Rescued a Woman. I had previously done some TTouch work with my other rescue dog Chase and wanted to learn and practice ways to calm Cay and help build her confidence. When Cay gets very worried, she often emits gas that can peel the paint off the walls! It’s a very noticeable stress indicator, and I’d like to eliminate it as much as possible. Read more…

Gwen Beberg and Ratchet are Reunited in Minnesota (Photos)!

You may remember that I wrote about Specialist Gwen Beberg and her Iraqi dog Ratchet back on November 4th. Ratchet, a border collie mix puppy, was rescued by U.S. soldiers from a burning trash pile in Iraq and was cared for by Beberg. Ratchet helped Beberg cope with the hardships she faced during her time in Iraq. When it was time for Beberg to return to the U.S., she wanted to bring Ratchet back with her, she couldn’t bear to leave him to the fate that awaited him in Iraq. Read more…
