The Dog Show

On Tuesday, Bandit and I were filmed for “The Dog Show”, a local TV show with host Donna Chicone. Bandit’s breeder Louanne and his 11 ½ year old grandfather Pete appeared with us in a segment on the Australian Cattle Dog. Read more…

Cay’s 7th Week of Obedience Class–Graduation

I was so proud of Cay last week. She graduated from obedience 1 class, passing all the exercises except the stay. It was the main exercise that I had practiced with her all week, knowing that it was the toughest one for her. During week 6, I noticed that it was hard for Cay to stay with a dog on either side of her. So all week we practiced with Chase in a stay on one side of her and Bandit in a stay on the other side. Update on Tinkerbelle from Wyoming

Yesterday Bunny wrote from Denver:

I just wanted to update everybody on Tinkerbelle. She has been here for a week. In that week she has learned to sit, will go her crate when you say “kennel” (most of the time), has finally learned how to work a kong and is learning social skills with my female and male. I had one of our fosters over the holiday and she played fine with him. She is a real doll and she just can not get enough loving. She also has the fastest wiggle butt in the west. First order on Monday is to start working on getting her a good home. Read more…

Snow Day!

It’s snowing here in Minnesota this morning, the first snow to stick here this year. The dogs are all excited, jumping up and down, even though there isn’t much. They love to run and play in the snow! Instead of just wondering if the roads will be bad for commuting to work tomorrow, or worrying about shoveling snow when my collar bone keeps dislocating due to a stretched ligament, it’s great to look at snow from their point of view. I pause to notice how beautiful it is, blanketing the trees in the woods behind our house. I notice how much fun it is to play ball with the dogs in the snow. They tear around like crazy in pure joy and I am in awe of them, living in the moment.

Foxie–Red Baby in Kentucky

On November 22nd, Lynne of Safe Hands Rescue in Minneapolis first told me about a 10-12 week old red heeler girl called “Foxie” at the Lincoln County Animal Shelter in Stanford, KY. I found out about her late on Friday night and she was scheduled to be euthanized on Monday morning. She was found wandering alone as a stray. Can you imagine? Read more…

My New Quilt Wall Hanging

I want to show you the quilted wall hanging that Michelle made for me. It has photos of nine of the dogs and cats that have shared my life over the years. It was designed before Cay joined us and includes:

Top row: Kate, Bandit, and Chase

Middle row: Nike, Pippi, and Marble

Bottom row: Rainbow, Rusty, and Zena

Quilt with Pet Photos

Isn’t it beautiful? If you have read 8 State Hurricane Kate, go back to pages 213-214 of the book. Rusty (bottom middle) is the old dog who passed on just moments before Bandit (top middle) came into my life. I think you’ll understand why I think that Bandit, the only red heeler puppy for miles around, was sent by Rusty just minutes after his passing.

Besides Bandit and Kate, Rainbow, Pippi, and Chase are also mentioned in the book.

Tinkerbelle–Rescued from a Chain in Wyoming

On November 10th, my friend Eileen posted this message to the AuCaDo Rescue Forum:

Please, I need help for a very sweet purebred Red Heeler. Her name is Tinkerbelle and she has been kept on a 3 ft chain for the past six months. She has NO shelter whatsoever and is NEVER allowed off the chain. She gets food and water and NOTHING else. No love, no attention – ever. It amazes me that a mountain lion or coyote has not gotten her yet. I live only about two miles away and have had a mountain lion hanging around trying to get my own pets for the past week.

The owner has agreed to give her to me. I cannot, and will not, take her unless she has a rescue to go to. I do NOT own a rescue anymore, and I have my plate full with my own animals. So unless someone steps up to help Tinkerbelle, she will stay where she is and will either die from the elements, or a wild animal will kill her. This isn’t a matter of “if,” it is a matter of WHEN. Giving Thanks

Today I’m thankful to have time outside with the dogs in the daylight. These days it’s dark by the time I get home from work. Sometimes I delay my morning departure to have a sliver of daylight to play ball with them in the yard before I leave. But today we have the whole day! This morning a long V of geese flew over. Chase and Cay ran across the field after them, all the way to the fenceline. It seems like they’re getting a late start on heading south.

Tinkerbelle is free of her chain in Wyoming and was safely delivered to Rocky Mountain Cattle Dog Rescue in Denver last weekend. Read more…

Cay’s 6th Week of Class

This week Cay did an awesome job in class. At home, Bandit and Chase kenneled up and Cay ran out the door to the garage ahead of me. A few weeks ago, she was afraid to go without the boys, but now she’s excited to go along with me to class! Read more…
