I first posted about this guy on November 9th. I stopped to visit him on Friday at the impound at a vet clinic in Maplewood, Minnesota. This guy is a very nice dog, not the “typical†dog that you might find in rescue (if there is a typical rescue dog!). I can’t believe that nobody is looking for this dog, or that there isn’t a good breeder in his past who might want him back. Read more…

Whew! This week I have been playing some sort of role on rescues in Wyoming, Georgia, Kentucky, Iowa, and Minnesota. When it rains, it pours! Australian Cattle Dog (ACD) Tinkerbelle was rescued from a short chain, a dismal excuse for a life, in Wyoming. Scooter, an ACD-border collie mix was rescued from a kill (gassing) shelter in Georgia, after being held over by a woman who was “supposed to” put him down and just couldn’t do it. Read more…

I like this one, especially considering how this week has gone. This has been circulating around the internet. I don’t know who to acknowledge. If you know, please pass on the info. Thanks!

IÂ rescued a human today.
Her eyes met mine as she walked down the corridor peering apprehensively into the kennels. I felt her need instantly and knew I had to help her. Read more…

It has been a busy week here, to say the least. I have been involved in one way or another with the rescues of three cattle dog types in three different locations. More on that later.
Cay’s 5th week of obedience school was mostly more of the same. She has greatly improved her ability to sit still for short periods of time. Now we need to extend the time. She can do a short wait, sit stay and down stay and now will let me walk back to her and “tuck†in at her right side without getting up. She used to want to get up whenever I returned to her on a stay. She’s a naturally gifted heeler, probably because she’s a “heelerâ€. Read more…

On Sunday I attended a fundraiser in Minneapolis for Safe Hands Animal Rescue. Safe hands was formed by a group of friends who volunteered in Mississippi, taking care of rescued animals after Katrina. The event was a “Thanks and Giving” reunion of many of the OVER 400 dogs they have helped rescue over the past 2 years. It was an amazing event for Safe Hands alumni dogs and the Safe Hands extended family of supporters, volunteers, foster and adoptive families. Fetch Delivers offered their warehouse space for the event.
I had been in contact with some of the Safe Hands people, like Lynne and Tess, via e-mail, but we had not met in person before. Read more…

Dora went into a Homeward Bound foster home with two older adults who work at home (no kids at home). They were concerned at first about how she would do with their cats, but she has done well there. I’m pleased to announce that they decided to adopt her and she is there to stay! Â Let’s hope that the third home is the charm for Dora! Once in a while things go smoothly and turn out well. 🙂 Dora is a sweetheart and deserves the best.

It’s getting late here, but I can’t go to bed without mentioning that it’s Bandit’s 5th birthday today. The only red ACD puppy for miles around, he found me just minutes after my old ACD-X Rusty died.
Bandit, aka Hillhaven Bolt Outof the Blue HSAs CD RA, is good at everything–obedience, Rally, agility, herding sheep, herding cattle, and tracking anything. Most of all, he loves playing with his jolly balls, carrying one while herding the other around the yard. When I sit at the computer for too long, he’s good at getting me out to play. If I don’t get up soon enough, he brings me the rubber chicken to throw over and over! Read more…

I’m so proud of Cay. It’s fun to see her finally, gradually come out of her shell. I have been working on teaching her the “silent down”, in which I tell her to sit, then lure her into a down. Eventually, she learns to anticipate that the next move from the sit will be a down. When she starts going into the down on her own, I can add the word “Down”. The hardest thing for Cay is sitting still in class, even when she’s been out for a 30 minute run with the boys before class. Between the exercises, while the instructor is talking and the other dogs are sitting still, Cay continues to offer different behaviors, perpetually trying to please me and figure out what will make me part with the next cookie. I have created a “Down Monster”! Read more…
