About a week and a half ago, I was contacted by a local all breed rescue about a red female Australian Cattle Dog that needed a new home. The rescue was overloaded and couldn’t take her, but wanted to find someone who could help. I was having one of those weeks that started with an unplanned trip to the vet, my truck was in the shop, my uncle was in the hospital, and I was just trying to get through the week. After some conversation, I vowed to try to help, but I couldn’t do anything right away. And after further conversation, I realized that this was the same dog I had been contacted about a few months ago. After all, how many ACDs named “Dora†are there around here? Read more…

A blue male Australian Cattle Dog (ACD) was found running loose in East Bethel, MN on October 30th. He was found with no microchip or ID. He has completed his 6 day impound period at a vet clinic in Maplewood, MN. Nobody has claimed him and they are looking for a rescue to take him in. I thought I’d better check around first to see if anyone is looking for him. He is estimated by the vet clinic staff to be 3 or 4 years old. He appears to be well bred and I can’t help but wonder if someone is missing him. Read more…

I woke up early this morning to the sound of gunshots. Actually, I woke to the sound of Chase barking at gunshots. He heard them before I did. Apparently deer hunting season has begun. This must be one of the two weekends per year that they allow a controlled hunt in the state park in our backyard. For Chase, who is sensitive to loud noises, it could be a very long weekend. He’s the boy who barks at thunder and doesn’t quite believe me when I tell him it’s ok. Read more…

Hurricane Katrina’s effect on New Orleans was massive, for more than just the human race. “8 State Hurricane Kate: The Journey and Legacy of a Katrina Cattle Dog” is a touching story of one of the Hurricane’s refugees, a dog named Kate was displaced through eight states. A story of the indomitable spirits of human and canine combined, it’s a brightening tale for dog lovers and those seeking a story of overcoming one of the worst natural American disasters in recent history. “8 State Hurricane Kate” is a great true story which will truly appeal to dog owners and their best friends.

Last night we went to Cay’s 3rd week of obedience school. We had been practicing at home, especially on the stationary exercises. Even after running with the boys for 1/2 hour before going to class, Cay doesn’t like to sit still. She is a champ at heeling and sits promptly at my side when I halt. But she doesn’t usually sit for long. She gets distracted by all of the activity around her and gets ADD when it’s time to sit still. At first she didn’t want to sit at all last night. I don’t think this was because she didn’t want to sit, but because she was too busy taking it all in to really HEAR me. The instructor showed me how to apply pressure to her collar (a soft martingale design) so that when Cay made the choice to sit, I could relieve the pressure right away. This worked well and Cay caught on right away. When she sat, I relieved the pressure immediately. Still, she didn’t sit still for long. Read more…

Well behaved women seldom make history.–Laurel Thatcher Ulrich
Ratchet the dog from Iraq recently arrived in Minnesota. You’ve probably heard of Ratchet and former Sgt Gwen Beberg, who rescued him from a burning pile of trash and didn’t give up on him. Beberg, now demoted to Specialist rank, stood by Ratchet until she was able to ensure his safety and send him home to Minnesota. If not for Beberg, Ratchet would likely be long dead by now.
I have something in common with Beberg–a dog that I couldn’t leave behind. Read more…

It has been a confusing day here in Minnesota. It was 73 degrees outside this afternoon, shirt sleeve weather. Yet the sun was low in the sky by the time I left work. The sky was dark at 5:30 pm, reminding us that it really is November. At 9:30 this evening, I had the screen door open and was listening to the crickets outside.
The price of gas was 1.999 at a station that I passed on the way home. I can’t remember gas costing less than $2 per gallon in the past 5 years. I wonder what it will cost the day after the election? Better fill up now! Read more…

On Saturday I took Cay to the local groomer to get her toenails clipped. That is one thing that we still have trouble with. I have tried doing one nail per day and taking it slowly, but it never seems to get done. I work on touching her feet at bed time and other times when I don’t have the clipper. I found this local person who is very helpful, even though Cay sometimes does her bucking bronco imitation when we’re trying to do her nails. She freaks out at the sound of a dremel, so we clip her nails instead. Even so, she doesn’t like it. Read more…
