Tonight Cay and I went to our second week of Beginner 1 obedience school. Actually, it was her second week. I have been many times, with many different dogs. 🙂
CayĂ‚Â pays goodĂ‚Â attention to me, probably because she would be scared in that situation without me, her known entity. She walks well on leash, heels well with me and sits well at my side (when I strategicallyĂ‚Â hold a treat there). She is amazingly calm, although I think that’s because she is taking it all in. She is very observant of everything around her, and doesn’t pull on the leash, lunge at other dogs or otherwise try to cause trouble. One of the men in class disturbed her tonight. When he was working next to us, she didn’t want to turn her back on him. Perhaps he reminded her of a bad guy from her past. Read more…

Jenny:
Thought I would share this with you since you are one of the reasons I got involved in transporting rescues.
As with most transports,  it looked like it was not going to pan out and might be cancelled, however, it did work out and I will be the oh so lucky one who gets to deliver the Newfie dog, Dominique, to her forever home. I am so stoked about it! What a privilege and honor!
First and foremost, I really, really, really wanted to do this soooo bad this particular weekend for one main reason-I am doing it in honor of my friend who recently died on October 8th. Read more…

We went to the vet to have Bandit’s stitches removed today. I was amazed again at how well the vet had stitched up the skin over Bandit’s eye and how well it has healed. As the stitches were being removed, I felt very fortunate that Bandit’s eye wasn’t injured. It was such a close call, about as close as you can get without poking the eye out. We’re lucky dogs!

My friend Sarah in Virginia rescued Chase from a violent man who was going to shoot him for chasing sheep. When Chase first came to live with us, he discovered that he could get my undivided attention when I was, ah, sitting on the toilet. When I’m the only person around, I don’t usually latch the door. There is a stool next to the toilet that I use when bathing dogs, reaching for high places, etc. One day Chase pushed his way into the bathroom and put his front feet up on that stool. I hugged him and told him how handsome he was, and how lucky we were that he came to live with us. Read more…

Today Cayenne started her first obedience class. She has been here with us since April and has had plenty of time to settle in. She has ridden along to obedience school, agility, and herding events. Now that summer is over and she has become much more comfortable in different situations, she gets to attend her own class.

This was distributed by the Humane Society legislative Fund. IMO, it makes some important points.
Humane Society Legislative Fund Endorses Obama-Biden
One of the guiding principles of the Humane Society Legislative Fund is that we evaluate candidates based on a single criterion: where they stand on animal protection policies. We don’t make decisions based on party affiliation, or any other social issue, or even how many pets they have. We care about their views and actions on the major policy debates relating to animal welfare.
It stirs controversy to get involved in candidate elections. But we believe that candidates for office and current lawmakers must be held accountable, or they will see the animal protection movement as a largely irrelevant political constituency. In order to have good laws, we need good lawmakers, and involvement in elections is an essential strategy for any serious social movement, including our cause. Read more…

This has been a busy week! At the end of last week, Barb O’Brien of the Animal Connection called. They were interested in auditioning/ photographing Bandit for a Cargill ad. The shoot would be at the beginning of this week. We had never doneĂ‚Â an adĂ‚Â before, but it sounded interesting.Ă‚Â Ă‚Â
Luck (or chance) would have it that Bandit injured himself on Sunday evening when we were out for a walk and play time. He went after the ball alongside the field fence, then turned back toward me, shaking his head. I thought that maybe he had been stung by an insect, but when I went closer to brush a perceived insect off of his face, it was attached. He had caught the skinĂ‚Â just aboveĂ‚Â his eye on a fence wire and peeled the skin back,Ă‚Â leaving a piece of skin hanging loose. Yikes! Read more…

It was fun to meet Christina and her family. They showed me a video of some of their disc dog routines, which were fun to watch. Their cat taught Bandit respect by bopping him on the head with a paw through the dog door when he was walking down the hall. He didn’t even know the cat was there at first! Funny how a dog that can move cattle can get intimidated by a cat! I signed Christina’s Kate book and soon had to leave for the Indy Hair Ball. Read more…

On Saturday we met the dog owner from hell. I stopped at a rest stop in eastern Ohio and was accosted by a huge friendly yellow lab while on my way to use the restroom. He came barreling down the hill from the picnic area (which was posted “No Pets”) and ran right toward me. This dog was at least 100 lbs of exuberance (think Marley and Me) and he was tearing all over the rest stop at full speed. Clearly, he had a lot of energy to burn and his owner didn’t have control over him. Read more…

On Friday we got to watch more of the cattle runs, but on Friday afternoon we had to head out. We packed up, said our goodbyes and hit the road heading west, planning to make it to eastern Ohio that night. We had a long drive on the Pennsylvania Turnpike before sneaking through a sliver of West Virginia and entering Ohio. The hills of eastern Pennsylvania and the steady stream of semi-truck traffic made it an arduous drive at times. But the countryside offered a beautiful view when I could sneak a peek. Bandit was worn out from our busy week and slept contentedly in the back seat. Ahhh—a tired cattle dog sleeping contentedly is a rare and beautiful sight! Read more…
