Visit to the Country Mill

I haven’t written much about Cay lately because there’s been so much going on here. But Cay has changed a lot in the past few weeks. She looks at me directly with her big dark-chocolate-brown eyes. She comes over to me for a cookie when I call her. She plays more exuberantly and is more outgoing with the boys. She doesn’t skulk around expecting to get beat up any more. She runs out the door with the boys and mostly runs back in with them too. She goes out with us at night and doesn’t act as afraid of the dark any more. She seeks me out and runs over to me for attention. Read more…

Cay’s 1st Birthday

The daisies are blooming this week, a whole field full of them out in front of the house.

According to the records from Tennessee, today is Cayenne’s 1st birthday. I don’t know if this was an estimate, or if Deb who rescued the puppies actually knows. I’ll have to ask her. This kind of snuck up on me, although I had noticed it before, so I didn’t make any big plans. Playing outside and running around is probably what Cay would want most though. It’s a nice day and we’ve been outside a lot. What a long way Cay has come since arriving at our house. She is much more confident and is having much more fun! Read more…

Because They Have No Words–Chicago

Yesterday I flew down to Chicago to see Tim Maddock’s play, “Because They Have No Words” at the Piven Theatre in Evanston. Tim volunteered caring for rescued animals at the Lamar-Dixon Expo Center in Gonzales, Louisiana after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. I was at L-D before Rita, but came into contact with Tim months later when he was trying to track down a dog and return her to her original family. Tim and I have corresponded off and on via e-mail and spoken on the phone a number of times, but this is the first time we met in person. Read more…

Cayenne

Cay came when I called her today! We were out in the large fenced area. She was hungry and saw me give a treat to Chase! Chase comes on a whistle and Bandit comes when called by name. Without formal training, Cay has picked up on the whistle. Now when I whistle, she tries to race Chase to get to me first. Read more…

Kindness for Kate Day

Today is “Kindness for Kate” Day. I spent extra time working with Cay and made a donation to a rescue group in honor of Kate.

Cay is revealing more of her personality to me each day. Today I dubbed her the “Blond Bullet” She is lighter than the boys in color and weight, but her legs are longer, so she can outrun them both if she tries. Read more…

Kate’s Book and Kindness for Kate Day is June 2nd

I’ve been working away on Kate’s book and soon will have a proof copy in hand. Soon it will be a real book!

I declared June 2nd Kindness for Kate Day. Since then I have kept up the tradition, asking everyone to do something kind for others. It doesn’t have to cost you anything. Read more…

Stability

After we returned from sheep herding in Pine City this afternoon, I found 3 messages from the woman who had expressed an interest in adopting Cay. Although I had told her that we wouldn’t be home or at the adoption event today, but could meet with her tomorrow, she left me three messages about Cay while we were gone. Strange. Read more…

ACD Ambassadors and New Home for Cay?

At agility class this evening, I handed out postcards about Kate’s book. Michelle, who has had her dog in some of the same agility classes with Bandit and Chase, asked me about the story. Then she told me that in the past, she had heard mostly negative things about cattle dogs. But since she’s seen my dogs and the work that I’ve done with them, she’s been impressed with ACDs. That made me feel good!

Today I received an inquiry about Cay. Read more…

Back Home

The dogs did well at Becky’s place while I was visiting NOLA. After returning from my trip there was some jockeying for pack position again, but nothing serious. We’re all happy to be home!

Return to New Orleans-7

This morning I checked out of my hotel in the French Quarter and picked up a rental car. I drove to Barnes and Noble in Metairie first, which had been recommended to me by the woman at the French Market. They have nice displays of dog books and regional interest books. I obtained the business card for their community relations person and left her one of the Kate book postcards and my book business card.

Next I drove to Plaquemines Parish to meet Laura at PAWS, who I have been corresponding with since 2005. Read more…
