I bathed all three dogs today. We’ve had so much mud here that they were very dirty. Cay didn’t like it, but I made her do it anyway. I made it into a doggie massage and gave her treats while in the tub. I think she’s starting to like the individual attention and physical touch from a person, something she didn’t have much as a pup.

Today we drove up to Pine City for sheep herding lessons at Kim’s place. Cay rode along and got to see sheep, ducks, and horses. She also got to walk on the leash with Kim, a “stranger†to her. It was a good trip for Cay.Â
This afternoon I got out the “flying squirrel†frisbees, a great treat for all 3 dogs! Cay is participating and running with the boys more.

Cay had diarrhea in her crate today. I wiped her off and washed the blankets, but we were in a hurry because we had an appointment with the vet. I wanted him to give her a general exam, check her ears (which seem to be bothering her) and check her back end. When we arrived, the vet was busy with an emergency, so I asked the receptionist to say hi to Cay, who is shy with strangers. When the vet checked her ears, he found that they were compacted with gunk. Read more…

Cay still has problems with peeing in the house, partly due to submissive nerves and partly because she has mostly been crated when inside. I don’t think she’s had much run of the house with anyone yet. She is still mostly crated while inside here too because I don’t have her fully integrated with Bandit and don’t want her to pee in the house every time something scares her. I usually let the boys out first, then get her to go out. She won’t always come when I call her or say “cmonâ€, although sometimes she does. So I need to grab her by the collar or snap the leash on and bring her near the door while I put my mud boots on. Read more…

Cayenne responded to “sitâ€! I think she must have known it before, but took some time to get comfortable enough with me to pay attention and listen. She does not know to come when called. She is not completely comfortable with people, especially when I bend over to snap the leash onto her collar. She is warming up to Lisa (the dog walker) and me more and more each day though. She likes to be petted and to have her belly rubbed.
My former Bernese Mountain Dog Zena was born on April 23rd. If she were still with us, this would be her 17th birthday. She passed on in March of 2002, but I can’t help but think about her on April 23rd. Here’s to you Z!!

Today was a beautiful spring day. We spent a lot of time outside. The pack behaves differently outside than inside. Cay pesters Bandit a lot outside and he doesn’t seem to react. She even nipped at his heels out in the yard. He just gave her a warning growl and she backed off. Crowded spaces can still be an issue though. I don’t have Cay loose with Bandit in the house yet.
Cay is afraid near the gates and the door, where Bandit has nailed her in the past. Read more…

Cay is settling in. She’s starting to get more confident around the house and yard. She follows me up and down the stairs on her own now—she doesn’t want to be separated from the rest of us. When I let her follow the boys down the “chute†from the field to the backyard for the first time, they got to the back yard without her. When I went to look for her, she had somehow gotten outside the fence, but wanted to stick with us and was trying to get back in. I went to the gate and was able to put the leash on her. She’s not as hand shy as she was when she first came here. She even smiles now and is starting to let her personality come out more. Cute little blondie!

Cay is acting like Bandit’s little shadow! Lucky she doesn’t have a tail that he can grab. Today she tried to nip at his heels a couple of times. That won’t last… I don’t think he’ll put up with it for long.

The chicken thief is at it again! This morning when I got up, Bandit was bringing one of the rubber chickens to me. I let Bandit and Chase out in the yard and went to get my coat (spring in Minnesota!)Â to take Cay out with them and supervise. She quickly snatched up the rubber chicken and deposited it in her crate, then followed me to the door. She already had the other chicken in there! Little thief!

This evening I took all three dogs out in the yard and they did fine, so I decided to take them up on the hill. I let the boys run up the hill as usual (inside the fence). I needed to be able to keep track of Cayenne to make sure I picked up all of her poop, and I was concerned that she might get out of the field fence if she tried hard (or possibly she could jump over it). I put on her collar with ID tags, hooked the leash to her martingale collar, and walked her up to the field via the south yard. Once the gate was closed, I let her go. Read more…
