Sheep Date

Today I found Cay with 2 rubber chickens, 2 bones, and 2 tennis ball bones in her crate! What a silly collector!

We went up to Pine City, Minnesota for Bandit and Chase’s sheep herding lessons. I took Cayenne along in her crate in the back seat. She got to get out, see some sheep and horses, and watch other dogs work sheep. She got to meet Kim and hear a snow blower (they were still trying to clear out their driveway from the snowstorm on Friday and Saturday). Read more…

Chicken Collector

With Cay on the leash, we walked 5 laps around the field today instead of 3. I didn’t have to pull her so much this time; she’s starting to get more comfortable walking along with me. Chase was play bowing and Cayenne wanted to chase the ball, but I had her on leash. Bandit focused on his ball and didn’t bother her.I let Cay loose in the backyard with Chase and she explored more of the yard. She’s eating better now and had her 3rd daily dose of Panacure tonight.

She’s starting to wander around and check everything out in the house and yard. What a curious girl! She collects all of the rubber chickens and takes them into her crate. This could cause conflict with Bandit because the chickens have always been “his” favorites.

Settling In

Cay and I went for a walk and did outdoor chores this morning. She doesn’t want to eat her dry food now. I think she got spoiled by the canned food with the panacure powder that she had last night! This morning she ate about half of the dry food, then I put it away so that Bandit would quit trying to get it from her crate.

Cay wants lots of petting and snuggles from me these days, even with me crawling halfway into her crate. Read more…

Little Chicken Thief!

Last night I moved a crate for Zulu/Cay into the living room and was planning to have her spend the night there. But it got pretty late and the last time I took her out, she did not want to come back up the stairs. I think she was afraid that I would put her in the bathtub again! It was almost 11:00 and I was exhausted, so I decided to let her stay in the basement and wait until today to try for upstairs. Read more…

Zulu Gets a Bath

We went for a walk this afternoon. Zulu ate, and she looks at me now. She still shies away from Bandit, who likes to be in charge. He charged and growled at her once, then I stopped him. I hope she likes water—she needs a bath!

Zulu is still skittish, but is showing more interest in me, like she wants to go along. Read more…

Zulu’s 2nd Day

Zulu slept in her crate (a large crate from my Bernese Mountain Dog Zena) last night. She loves the crate and likes to have towels to scrunch up. She hasn’t eaten anything since she’s been here, not even the cookies that she had in her crate in the car. She tried to bury those under the towel. I gave her a bowl of food last night and she has shown interest in it, but hasn’t eaten any that I can tell. She overturned it once last night and I think she was trying to bury it. I left a bowl of  water with her and she didn’t drink any. This morning I held the water bowl out to her, and the light bulb went on—“Oh, this is water” and she drank all of it. She seems to have the stray dog mentality of hoarding something when you can get it because you don’t know when you’ll get it again. Read more…

Bringing Zulu Home

Just a bit of background on Zulu…last summer, when I was still on the board of ACDRI, Deb Foster from the Henderson County Humane Society in Lexington, TN left a message on the ACDRI hotline requesting financial help. It was my day to pick up messages. Deb had a litter of 7 ACD-X puppies that had been abandoned in the Tennessee wilderness (listed elsewhere on this site as “the Z kids”, since Deb gave them all names starting with Z).  Read more…

PUPPY MILL MALE & FEMALE IN MINNESOTA

“Heelers” Rescued from Puppy Mill in Minnesota:

In February 2008, I learned of two “heelers” that were rescued as part of a puppy mill bust in south central Minnesota. A male and female, both 6-7 years old, had been used for breeding. They had apparently lived on short chains, outdoors all their lives and lived in deplorable conditions. Read more…

ACD PUPPIES (The Z Kids)

Cute ACD Puppies!!

At the end of July, Debbie Foster of the Henderson County Humane Society in Lexington, TN rescued a litter of 7 ACD (red heeler) puppies. She took them to the vet and 3 were diagnosed with coccidia, with the other 4 also vulnerable. She left all 7 pups with the vet to be treated, hoping they would survive. I learned about these pups when Deb asked for help with the vet bills. She estimated then that the puppies were 10-12 weeks old. Read more…

PIRATE

PIRATE
(ACD, Louisiana) rehomed in Minnesota (November 2006)

Pirate, a very sweet blue female ACD was on death row at Roicy Duhon Animal Control in Lafayette, Louisiana (a kill shelter with a gas chamber)—the same place that Billabong came from.
Here are her shelter notes and photos: Read more…
