KENNA

Kenna’s Guardian Angels
(written by Rebecca, Kenna’s foster mom)

Anyone who knows me knows that I love dogs. Well, I love pretty much any creature, even the creepy crawly ones. But the softest spot in my heart is reserved for Australian Cattle Dogs, particularly rescues. I can’t help but to want to help those wayward furkids. Kenna was no different.

Having such a love of ACD’s, I am, of course, on an ACD internet forum. People from all over the world write in about their cattle dogs, whether it be a show dog or an agility dog or just a plain good companion dog. They also write in about cattle dogs that need rescuing. Who can pass up reading those posts? I can’t. For the most part, though, I am able to refrain from taking action, as we already have 4 dogs, 2 cats, a foster pigeon (yes, I said a foster pigeon), and 6 fish tanks. Do we need another mouth to feed or paws to walk? Sure. Well, no. Not exactly.

Sometimes, though, I can’t help myself. Read more…

BANDIT

Bandit
Bandit has Rusty’s blaze and red ears. The only red ACD pup for miles, he found me minutes after Rusty died. The circumstances that brought me with my dying ACD-X and Louanne with her red ACD pup to the vet at the same time were unusual, but no coincidence. It wasn’t even Louanne’s regular vet, as she lives many miles away.

Bandit and Chase

Bandit was raised by Rainbow and lived with Kate for a while. He is now Chase’s best buddy. He turned 5 years old in November. He is so smart and capable that I have been challenged to keep him busy. We have trained in obedience, rally, herding, and agility. He is my first herding dog and clearly, I have a lot of catching up to do!
Just before he turned 3, Bandit amazed me by placing 2nd in versatility at the Australian Cattle Dog Clue of America National Specialty in Rochester, MN. (http://www.acdca.org/ACDCA2006/). He is an extraordinary dog. His official name is Hillhaven Bolt Outofthe Blue CD HSAs RA CGC.

CHASE

Chase (ACD-X, Virginia) rehomed in Minnesota, with me in May of 2006

We think that Chase is a red heeler/ Collie mix. He was dropped off at my friend Sarah’s rescue in western Virginia early in 2006. Sarah and I met in Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina in September 2005. We had both gone down to help care for rescued animals and became good friends after our experience there. After we returned home (I to Minnesota and Sarah to Virginia) we stayed in contact. I had taken home a rescued cattle dog (Kate) to care for her. Sarah’s shelter had taken in 20 rescued animals from Louisiana and Mississippi.

I was amazed at all that Sarah accomplished through her rescue organization, Lost Fantasy Stables and Animal Rescue. I started to help her apply for grants to help support her the animals in her care. One day I logged onto her website (www.lostfantasystables.com) to get information for a grant application. Up popped “Fred”, who was listed as an Australian Cattle Dog/Sheltie mix. He didn’t look very happy in those early photos. Read more…

TAS

Tas (ACD-Wisconsin) rehomed in Minnesota (May 2006)

Tas is a 7 year old blue male ACD from Wisconsin. His life changed when his family went through a divorce. They realized that he wasn’t getting enough attention because they were away from home for long hours. They decided that it would be best to find him a new home. When they contacted me, I asked them to be patient until I could find a place for him to go. I knew that if they took him to a shelter, he would be much less likely to find a happy home.Fortunately, his family waited for two months while I found him another option. At the end of May, volunteers helped transport Tas to Minnesota along with Chase (Fred). Homeward Bound in Minnesota took him into a foster family. Read more…
