Happy Anniversary Chase! You’re the Best!

I can hardly believe that Chase has been here for 4 years! My Katrina friend Sarah Dutton rescued him from a violent man in Virginia. During Memorial weekend of 2006, he traveled all the way to Minnesota to join our family. Eleven people, including Laura Gonzo, Emily Anderson and others helped him along the way (thanks everyone!). Chase has turned out to be the most loving and sensitive friend. Click here to see the classic post with Chase’s story and photos. Click here for one of my favorite stories about Chase. Happy anniversary buddy. I love you. You’re the best!

Chase is a great example of a wonderful dog who found himself in a dangerous situation and thrived when given a second chance. So many wonderful animals are out there looking for that second chance.

June 2nd is the 4th Annual “Kindness for Kate” Day

In 2007, June 2nd was first declared “Kindness for Kate” Day in honor of 8 State Hurricane Kate. This year, on Wednesday, June 2nd, in honor of Kate, please do something to make the world a better place. Plant a flower. Say a prayer. Help somebody. Give hope to a homeless animal. Perform an act of kindness. Collect your spare change and donate it to an animal rescue group or a food shelf. Appreciate someone’s efforts. Volunteer. Or come up with your own idea and post it here. Stick your neck out and do something new that you haven’t done before. Tell us about it. Let’s make June 2nd an awesome day!

Sunny and Possum–Something to Celebrate

Sometimes we try to save animals who are running out of time and we don’t make it and feel like failures. This week, I have something to celebrate. I shared an amazing experience where things seemed to magically click into place to help save two dogs’ lives. A group of wonderful people from Arizona, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Kentucky, and points in between helped a homeless mama cattle dog escape a hellhole in Harlan, Kentucky and travel to a safe foster home in Wisconsin. Earlier this week, Lynne of Safe Hands Rescue (http://www.safehandsrescue.org/) in Minneapolis contacted me about the mama cattle dog. Another group had rescued the puppies and left their red mama behind. Lynne had thought the other rescue group was going to save the mama too, and was upset to find out that she was still there. Lynne’s rescue group, Safe Hands, would have rescued the mama the week before if they’d known she would be left. But now Safe Hands was full-up with other dogs they had saved and Lynne couldn’t forget the mama cattle dog.

Finding Your True Passions in Life: What I Learned from My Journey with 8 State Hurricane Kate

I often run into people who are searching to find and fulfill their real purpose in life. I feel fortunate that I’ve found my true callings in life and know why I’m here and what to do.

Often as children we’re very in tune with our passions, but as we get older we get bogged down with responsibilities and forget what used to make us tick. When I teach a community education class called, “How to Discover Your True Passions in Life: What I Learned from My Journey with 8 State Hurricane Kate”, I encourage people to set aside quiet time to reflect on the following questions, to help get back in touch with their true passions. Please comment below to let me know how these questions worked for you.

Questions to Ask Yourself:

  • What did I love to do most when I was a kid?
  • Do I still spend time doing that? Do I miss doing that?
  • How could I create time to spend on that activity now?
  • Have I had a strong urge or calling that I’ve been ignoring or resisting?
  • What would happen if I stopped resisting that calling?
  • What part of myself do I miss or want to develop more?
  • What opportunities do the people and animals in my life present?
  • How can I better follow my intuition and listen to my inner voice?
  • What is holding me back?

Not Without My Dog–The Mahabharata

Thank you to Sharon Azar-Hahn for sharing this story with me:

“Do you know the story of Yudhisthira? It’s from an Indian classic story called the Mahabharata. It’s on the subject of ‘not without my dog’. Here it is”:

Once upon a time a very noble and skilled man named Yudhisthira was told that after so much bravery he finally deserved to go to paradise with his brothers. So the gods told them the directions that they needed to follow in order to reach the gates of Indra’s heaven, their final destination, where they would find peace and joy. So off they went through the mountains on their pilgrimage towards paradise. The path was very long and painful; it never seemed to end. They didn’t have enough to eat and drink, the nights were cold and the days were hot, and one by one they died, leaving Yudhisthira alone.

One day he was very tired, resting under a tree, when a thin and ugly dog approached. From that day on, the dog followed Yudhisthira everywhere he went. Together, they passed through edgy rocks, hot sand, painful thorns and deep mud. When there was food, both of them ate; when there was nothing to eat, both of them starved. Finally, after a long time, they saw the chariot of Indra and they ran towards the flying machine.

“Oh, you finally arrived! I have been waiting for you for so long! It’s a pleasure to have you here in my chariot, let’s fly to my heaven!” said Indra. “But… the dog can’t come, look at him, he’s old and thin–not worthy of my heaven.” Yudhisthira thought for a while and said, “I’m sorry, if the dog can’t come with me, I will go back now. I thank you for your invitation, but I cannot leave my dog, as he was my faithful companion during this journey.”

Heart of the Horse

Her name was Ruby. She was a striking, powerfully-built black and white horse known as a “Gypsy Vanner”. Her ancestors pulled the colorful wagons that gypsies lived in, bringing to mind my own Bohemian ancestors. Although I had some experience with horses, Ruby and her two stable mates were the first Gypsy Vanner horses I had ever met. I immediately felt a strong connection to Ruby.  She was solidly built, sturdy. When she looked me directly in the eye, I knew right away that she had a message for me. I just didn’t know yet what it was. Read more…
